The National Indigenous Peoples Day
Did you know that June 21 marks the National Indigenous Peoples Day and that a host of discovery activities will be organized across the country? As part of the National Indigenous History Month celebrated in June in Canada, this special day is part of the Canadian festivities that mark the start of the summer season, just like Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Canada Day, and Canadian Multiculturalism Day.
As health workers involved in the communities of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis in the Far North, we at Premier Soin Nordik are proud to take part in this Indigenous culture day!
What is the National Indigenous Peoples Day?
Before the festive and cultural aspect of the National Indigenous Peoples Day, this day first marks the recognition by the Canadian Constitution of the Métis, Inuit, and First Nations, an important step in the struggle for the recognition of these communities who have or have not ceded their territories in the past.
June 21 is also the discovery of a cultural richness often unknown to Canadians, the celebration of cultural diversity, but also the validation of the exceptional achievements made in the past or ongoing!
Why June 21? Summer solstice, this date remains significant as the longest day of the year, but Indigenous communities and groups have chosen it for various celebrations over the centuries.
Why create the National Indigenous Peoples Day?
As mentioned earlier, the objective of this day is to recognize and celebrate the culture, traditions, contributions, and achievements of Indigenous peoples.
Requested by the National Indian Brotherhood in 1982 and the Assembly of First Nations and non-Indigenous Conference in 1995, a First Peoples' Day was also recommended by the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, also in 1995.
Following consultations with the main communities, it was finally proclaimed in 1996.
